Middle School Math Teacher
Green Acres School is seeking a full-time teacher of math to Middle School students. The successful candidate will have an approach to the discipline that encourages a high degree of math fluency and problem solving by balancing an established and successful scope and sequence with interesting and engaging projects. We believe that students are most successful when their ability to "speak and write math" is cultivated alongside their ability to solve problems showing their work. The successful candidate will have a deep understanding of how math creates models of our world and will incorporate that understanding by teaching math not just as abstract problems and theory, but also as it explains and illustrates the world around us. The successful candidate will have the capacity to meet the needs of a range of learners—both engaging struggling students as they hone their number sense and teaching advanced math to students ready for that challenge. Our Lower School through 6th grade use the enVision math program from Savvas. Our pre-algebra and regular algebra classes use McDougall-Littel math books as the main text. And our advanced algebra program uses Exeter Math 1 as the backbone of the curriculum.
Middle school math teachers also serve as student advisors and engage students in social-emotional learning, as well as acting as liaisons between advisee families and the school. Core Middle School teachers accompany students as a chaperone on overnight trips of 3–5 days once or twice a year. Finally, our math teachers incorporate competition work for programs like MathCounts into occasional lessons and lead math teams in countywide and statewide competitions.

Middle School Spanish Teacher
Green Acres School is seeking a dedicated full-time Spanish teacher to teach students at several grade levels. The immersive approach to teaching languages that we embrace, based on research in language development, is highly communicative. Teachers conduct classes mostly in Spanish, balancing work in the Savvas Realidades textbooks with authentic conversations, listening and speaking exercises, skits, written stories, and other engaging activities to get students learning new skills, vocabulary, and concepts, and also honing their ability to genuinely use the language through receptive and generative practice. The teacher will also work towards preparing the students for the National Spanish Exam. Our 6th graders take level 01 of the exam, our 7th graders take level 1, and our 8th graders take level 2.

Middle School Math/Science Teacher, Grades 5 & 6
Green Acres School is seeking a teacher of math and science for 5th and 6th grade students.
In line with our progressive school mission, the successful candidate will have an approach to math that cultivates a high degree of math fluency and problem solving, one that balances an established scope and sequence with interesting and engaging projects. We believe that students are most successful when their ability to “speak and write math” is cultivated alongside their ability to solve problems showing their work. The successful candidate will have a deep understanding of how math creates models of our world and will incorporate that understanding by teaching math not just as abstract problems and theory, but also as it explains and illustrates the world around us. Our teachers bring many of their own materials, methods, and ideas to the table, but we follow the general plan of the Envisions Math program, and we use the accompanying textbook and other provided materials as resources.
The successful candidate will also get students doing science. We practice our progressive school values through a hands-on approach to learning, engaging students in the study of science through real-world applications. Kids are on their feet, working in groups, creatively problem solving, and exercising the skills of active learning. They take nature walks, study the creek that runs through our campus, build and launch rockets, participate in a disease outbreak simulation, and design disaster-proof houses. Green Acres has embraced the Maker movement, and our curriculum in Middle School engages students actively in coding, robotics, and 3D printing. A tech-focused explorations art class is likely to be part of this position. Likewise, our science program promotes environmental stewardship through gardening projects, environmental exploration and study, and our certification as an MAEOE Green School. Altogether, we want to inspire students in every discipline and seek a science teacher whose creative approach to the real world will motivate kids to think and experiment scientifically, while also building a strong foundation of scientific thought and knowledge.
Across areas, the successful candidate will have the capacity to meet the needs of a range of learners in a relatively heterogeneous setting. Moreover, this individual will have an approach to each discipline that encourages deep knowledge and conceptual fluency. The candidate will also serve as a student advisor, mentoring students in social-emotional learning and acting as a liaison between advisee families and the school, and will be asked to accompany students as a chaperone on overnight trips of 3–5 days once a year.
Middle School Language Arts Teacher, Grades 7 & 8
Green Acres seeks an experienced Middle School language arts teacher. The 7th and 8th grade language arts program helps students to become increasingly sophisticated as readers, writers, and thinkers by engaging them in the reading of novels (like The Outsiders and Long Way Down), poetry, and short stories, and by having them write both creatively and analytically. Applicants should demonstrate experience in hands-on, project-based learning, as well as more traditional forms of instruction. Students currently engage in projects where they stage a mock trial, write memoirs and poetry, and become part of a “Human Library.” Middle School classes cultivate skills through collaboration, critical thinking, and creative problem solving. Our teachers are able to use best practices in classroom management while also building strong relationships with individual students. The expectation for professional collaboration is high in order to coordinate efforts as a teaching team, to serve students effectively, and to build integrated cross-curricular projects. This full-time position would also include serving as an advisor to a small group of students and as a liaison to the families of those students. Teachers are expected to plan and supervise day field trips and to participate in an overnight field trip of several nights’ duration in the spring.
