Group of students and a beloved teacher

2020 Alice Mendham Powell Award Winner

Green Acres School founder Alice Mendham Powell believed that education is the engine of social change. This award in her honor goes to a Green Acres School alum who has demonstrated independent thought and made outstanding professional, philanthropic, or volunteer accomplishments in an area such as: education, business, athletics, creativity, or work for the greater good.

Leigh Silverman '88

Tony-nominated director Leigh Silverman '88 made history with the 2018 Broadway production of The Lifespan of a Fact by assembling the first all-female design team on Broadway.

"I started Green Acres in the third grade, coming from public school where I had been really struggling. I didn’t seem to learn the ways other did and I needed a smaller classroom, more specialized attention, and a strong focus on the arts, creativity, and progressive ideas. It was here I found my people, here I gained a sense of wonder about the world and real interest in learning more about it."
