Thanks to widely-popularized educational and neuroscientific research, it seems like everyone is (finally!) talking about progressive education! We all want our children to be engaged citizens, stewards of the earth, joyful learners, and innovative thinkers—a radical idea when Green Acres School championed it in the 1930s. Now we know that cultivating this type of scholarship and leadership is more essential than ever—and Green Acres is proud to be among the original progressive schools in the nation.
On Sunday, October 28 from 1:30-3:30 PM, families are invited to discover what authentic progressive education looks like at Green Acres School’s “Hands-On, Not Heads-Down!” Discovery Day. The afternoon will showcase all that progressive education has to offer through a variety of challenging, engaging, and fun activities. Learn more here.
There's something for everyone at Discovery Day and this event is not to be missed. Current and prospective families are welcome, as well as curious community members! RSVP to Judy: email@example.com.
Our Team-Oriented Philosophy
The Athletic Program is open to all students in Grades 5 through 8. Our “no-cut” policy is intended to give our athletes an introduction to both teamwork and the true meaning of sportsmanship. Our goal is for Green Acres athletes to step onto the field or court with the ideal of making the players around them better. Once they leave Green Acres, many of our athletes go on to participate in sports in high school and college. They are routinely recognized by their peers and coaches as leaders on and off the playing field.
Our program offers students an opportunity to participate fully on a number of teams including soccer, cross-country, basketball, softball, and track and field. At least 80% of our Middle Schoolers participate regularly in at least two sports during their time at Green Acres.
Capital Athletic Conference
Green Acres is a member of the Capital Athletic Conference, a seven-school league made up of Pre-K to 8th grade schools in the Greater Washington Metropolitan Area. In addition to Green Acres, the schools include:
- Congressional School of Virginia
- Immanuel Christian School
- Langley School
- Sheridan School
- St. Patrick's Episcopal Day School
- Westminster School
We also regularly compete against:
- Lowell School
- Melvin J. Berman Hebrew Academy
- National Presbyterian School
- Washington Episcopal School
Annual Alumni Cross Country Classic
Our students designed, built, and maintain Green Acres' very own one-mile cross-country course ("The Racks"), which traverses the school's 15-acre campus. Once a year, we recognize the accomplishments of our alumni who have gone on to compete successfully in athletics at the college and/or professional levels. After the race, our recognized alumnus/a shares his or her experiences with our 4th–8th graders—always underscoring how athletics complemented and enhanced their academic endeavors and lifelong goals.
