Head of School Rebecca Geary will be saying farewell to Green Acres at the end of the next school year, which coincides with her contract end date of June 30, 2023.The past two years have been a difficult time for our community, our country, and the world. When we hired Rebecca in December of 2019, few could have predicted that within months we would all be confronting a deadly pandemic, our students would be learning on screens, and Green Acres would be reimagining progressive education on a daily basis. Rebecca’s enthusiasm for the School’s mission, her financial acumen, and her deep concern for the community’s well-being have steadied us in this turbulent time. She has steered us through the pandemic, balancing the unforgiving demands of COVID-19 with the critical social, developmental, and academic needs of our students. At the same time, Rebecca has brought her business experience to bear on the School’s operations, with very positive results. She oversaw significant upgrades to our internal processes that have resulted in lower costs, improved reporting, and greater accountability, all of which has facilitated better financial decision-making. Rebecca has also been critical to launching the strategic planning process, which has been led by Board Vice Chair and parent Heather Walter and Trustee-elect, parent, and alumna Julia Martin '97. That process has reinvigorated our focus on the academic benefits of a progressive education alongside the social and emotional benefits that we all cherish. The timing of Rebecca’s departure allows our community to conduct a thoughtful and inclusive search for our next Head of School. The Board is pleased to announce that Aimee Wadeson '92 (parent, alumna, former staff member, and current GASPA co-chair) and Thomas Pinder '84 (alum and Board Vice-Chair) have agreed to lead our search. Over the summer, the Board will select a consultant to assist with the search and identify members of the community to serve on a search committee. We will provide additional information in the near future. The Board of Trustees is grateful to Rebecca for her many contributions to Green Acres and her deep love and care for the School. She will leave us on firmer financial footing and with a renewed enthusiasm for the very best in progressive education, and we will benefit for years to come from the changes she has overseen. We look forward to opportunities in the coming school year to properly thank Rebecca for her leadership.
