Rebecca Geary, Head of School

Rebecca Thomas Geary grew up in Silver Spring, MD and appreciates the value of progressive education as an administrator, teacher, and parent.

As a child, she loved exploring the woods of Sligo and Rock Creek Parks and she now relishes the hope of returning to her familiar surroundings. There are many facets of Green Acres School that speak to Rebecca’s heart, to her values, and to her lifelong learner passions. Her life’s work has been to seek equity and access for young people, from developing a one-on-one mentorship program for teenagers in Avon, Massachusetts, to creating and coordinating multi-school cultural experience that affirms the Brazilian community on Martha’s Vineyard, to starting a youth council in hopes that young voices may reach the board of trustees.

In her many roles, Rebecca has stayed true to her core values of simplicity, peacemaking, integrity, community, equity, and service. Her personal commitment to social justice and multicultural and global education led her to pursue her master’s degree in global education/multicultural curricula from Lesley University in Cambridge, MA. She is an MBA candidate at Johns Hopkins University’s Carey School of Business, retains a direct marketing diploma from New York University, and a bachelor of science in textile marketing from the University of Maryland, College Park.

Rebecca was the executive director of the Farm and Wilderness and Ninevah Foundations in Plymouth, VT, and was the associate director of admissions, interim director, and assistant director of studies at Buckingham Browne & Nichols School in Cambridge, MA. Prior to her administrative work, Rebecca taught Spanish and French at Buckingham Browne & Nichols, was the 6th grade homeroom advisor and 6-8th grade Spanish teacher at Oak Bluffs School, and served as a Montessori teacher in Tisbury, MA. Prior to her work in education, Rebecca served as a marketing director and project manager of several corporate retailers and importers and traveled to over 20 countries in her corporate work.

Rebecca is an avid presenter at local and national conferences. She has presented at the National Association of Independent Schools People of Color Conference, and the American Camp Association New England Conferences. She has been active in the National Association of Multicultural Educators (NAME), Independent Schools Admissions Professionals (AISAP), and the National Council of Teachers of Mathematics (NCTM). She was a fellow at the NAIS Aspiring Heads of School and is affiliated with American Camp Association, Outdoor Afro, Black Girls Run, Black Marathoners, and a parent volunteer for admissions and fundraising at the Putney School.

Rebecca served on multiple boards, including the Windsor Central Supervisory School Board in Woodstock, VT, the Vermont School Board, Two Rivers Supervisory Union in Ludlow, VT, and the Family Focus Adoption Agency in Long Island, NY. She is a member of the Harvard Chapter of Phi Delta Kappa and has been a frequent panelist on admissions, multicultural parenting, and curriculum coordination.

Rebecca Geary is well regarded as an experiential educator and international businessperson, and is a strong advocate for the rights of underserved communities, for education innovation, for volunteer fundraising, and for strategic planning.
