Middle School Scholarship Awards

This $15,000 annual award honors Ann Kappell Danner, former counselor at Green Acres School, who began her career as a humanities teacher. Ann was passionate about ensuring that school was a safe space for all, advocating for LGBTQ+ students, and inspiring students to engage in activism and volunteer work. The 2023–2024 prize will be awarded to a rising 6th or 7th grade student who demonstrates a strong passion for the humanities and/or social justice.

Current students and applicants are invited to apply. Recipients of this award will receive $15,000 per year, as long as they remain in good standing with the school; they are additionally encouraged to apply for financial aid as needed.

To apply, candidates must reply to one of the following questions, either in essay (250 words) or .mp4 video (1–2 minutes) format. Please submit your response to scholarships@greenacres.org.

• Talk about a piece of literature that resonated with you and explain why.
• Describe a time when you were an upstander or advocated for others in a situation you perceived to be unjust.
• What is something you learned in English/language arts or social studies that shaped how you look at the world?

We also invite you to share your past work as a way of strengthening your application. No portfolio or supplemental material is required, but the inclusion can only help your application and give us a chance to know you better. Examples of what to submit include photos, videos, and any written materials.

This $15,000 annual award honors Daniel Luxemburg '99, a Green Acres alumnus who passed away in 2022. Daniel was a software engineer who also was interested in science and mathematics, film, and fine arts. The 2023-2024 prize will be awarded to a rising 6th or 7th grade student who demonstrates a strong interest in science, technology, engineering, art, and/or mathematics.

This $15,000 annual award honors Ruth Crawford Seeger, a music teacher at Green Acres School during the 1940s, as well as an accomplished musician and composer, who brought folk songs to American schools. The 2023–2024 will be awarded to a rising 6th or 7th grade student who demonstrates a strong passion and talent for performing and/or visual arts.

Current students and applicants are invited to apply. Recipients of this award will receive $15,000 per year, as long as they remain in good standing with the school; they are additionally encouraged to apply for financial aid as needed.
