Green Acres School was founded in 1934 by parents who wanted to develop in their children a love of learning, a sense of intrinsic motivation, and a deep commitment to social justice. Green Acres instills a strong set of academic, interpersonal, and leadership skills that will serve students well in high school, college, and into adulthood.

As you consider Green Acres, ask yourself, would you be excited if your child:

  • Developed strong and respectful relationships with each teacher?
  • Engaged in challenging and interesting schoolwork that builds core academic skills?
  • Practiced being a respectful citizen, collaborator, self-advocate, and confident leader?
  • Experienced the joy of music, the arts, and athletics?
  • Developed a lifelong appreciation for our multicultural world and diverse local community?
  • Enjoyed the outdoors, developing a sense of stewardship for the environment?
  • Loved coming to school every day?

At Green Acres, we are committed both to the principles of progressive education and to ongoing exploration of what this means in the 21st century. I invite you to explore our website to gain a deeper understanding of who we are as a leader in progressive education. Of course, the best way to get to know us is to visit and to see our students and teachers in action!

Green Acres faculty members understand that at the heart of a great school lies genuine respect for each student and a curriculum that challenges students academically, ethically, and socially. We all understand that students need to become strong readers, writers, speakers, mathematicians, and scientists. We also believe that students must become independent thinkers capable of much more than rote memorization. Rather than simply demonstrating what they remember, our students show what they can do with information and how they can apply concepts to serve others. At Green Acres, children not only write, read, and compute. They also play, plant, design, act, build, sing, invent, explore, and perform community service. This approach contributes to their engagement and to the development of a genuine love for learning that our students carry with them throughout life. In turn, this love of learning contributes to their many accomplishments in and out of the classroom. Our teachers are masters of their subjects, who teach with a holistic approach and with a keen understanding of, and sensitivity to, the complexities of each child’s development.

Thank you for your interest in Green Acres—a school and community alive with the excitement of learning.

Sincerely,
