At Green Acres School, a cornerstone of our progressive program is “authentic learning”– learning that relates to students’ experiences and the real world. Our program emphasizes small classes and experiential, hands-on learning integrated across subjects.

Authentic learning demands collaboration among teachers to integrate the curriculum, teaching a given topic across multiple disciplines in a way that offers students additional perspective and greater understanding. Our teachers, therefore, go far beyond simply sharing information with students. They work diligently and intentionally to plan compelling, meaningful opportunities for authentic learning experiences.

Our students don’t simply learn information; they practice using information to accomplish meaningful tasks. Authentic learning at Green Acres is designed to help students develop effective learning habits that will ultimately yield success in the wider world.

Neal Brown describes progressive education at Green Acres in the 21st century as “authentic education.” He cites his mentor, Ted Sizer, the former dean of Harvard University’s Graduate School of Education, who argues that it is “people’s habits that we most value and respect” and that schools must therefore “nurture good habits.”

History of Green Acres School

More than 80 years ago, Alice Mendham Powell founded Green Acres, a school based on the ground-breaking ideas of John Dewey and other educational reformers such as Francis W. Parker and Jane Addams. These progressive-era and early-20th-century thinkers and activists put forth important notions about education, which continue to form the foundation for contemporary progressive educators nationwide.
