Spanish
Acquiring Language Through Active Engagement
The Lower School Spanish language program is founded on the belief that children learn a second language best in a lively and fun setting that incorporates a variety of materials and methods. Our third and fourth graders first hear and see Spanish words in context; the structure of the language is learned through a natural and holistic approach. Then, through the interaction of songs, games, art activities, and dialogue, they begin to acquire vocabulary, to become familiar with the structure of the language, and to practice speaking and writing in meaningful phrases and simple sentences. Students learn about the countries where people speak Spanish, and they gain insight into different ways of life. Research shows that children who learn a second language during the elementary years gain flexibility in thinking, higher level thinking skills, and divergent thinking.
