Green Acres School History

In 1934 Alice Mendham Powell founded a new school at Greenwood Farm.
Alice saw a need in the Washington area for a school that was less static and regimented than traditional schools. At Green Acres teachers would take a more creative approach to the education of young children by teaching a child to think. Having a child engaged in his or her learning in a meaningful way promised a crop of joyous life long learners.
Alice hired a handful of highly qualified educators and opened the school in an old stone house called Greenwood Farm. With seven students ages two to ten, paying $120 a year tuition, Green Acres School was launched.
