The Curriculum: A Foundation for Lifelong Learning

The Green Acres philosophy is grounded in a belief that children are naturally curious about their world and that they learn best in an environment that balances their social, emotional, physical, and creative development in an atmosphere of intellectual rigor. Today, the school continues that tradition in many ways.
- An understanding of child development guides our curriculum.
- A focus on the “whole child,” addresses cognitive, social, emotional, physical, and creative development continuously.
- Students learn by doing—exploring and solving problems—while engaging in a rich variety of inviting and challenging ideas, materials, and experiences.
- The curriculum is connected among diverse subject areas.
- Teachers nurture students, each of whom is unique and respected, so students may know and accept themselves and become increasingly confident and independent.
- Students learn social responsibility in large ways, such as community service projects and protection of our natural environment, and small, such as recognizing the skills and needs of others, learning the ability to resolve conflicts, and contributing to groups in which they participate.
- Green Acres promotes awareness and value of the rich diversity of people and perspectives in our community and our world through a curriculum encompassing many different cultures and ideas.
Learning Made Meaningful: A spiraling, integrated curriculum
At Green Acres, learning follows a continuum. As students mature, they revisit skills and concepts in various subject areas on increasingly advanced levels. At the same time, they move forward into new areas of study. At all grade levels, the curriculum highlights complementary activities in social studies, language arts, math, science, and the arts. This integrated approach to learning gives vitality and depth to our children’s explorations. As experience builds on experience, students become experts on a topic and see connections between areas of learning.Click below to learn more about how we craft and apply our philosophy in the students we serve.
