Green Acres School Community

At Green Acres School we strive to develop an ongoing community with school staff, children, and families. Together we create an environment of trust, cooperation, inclusion, and mutual respect.

People visiting Green Acres for the first time often comment on the pervasive sense of community here. The walls are covered with children’s art, with banners lovingly made by graduating 8th graders, and with hand-made quilts made by students and staff members for special occasions. Children’s faces reflect their happiness and comfort here; the school truly is their second home. Our students and staff get to know each other as friends and address each other by first names. Our students love dropping in to our Head’s office to say hello to “Louieee!”

Parents, too, love being at Green Acres, and volunteer here in many ways. The Green Acres School Parents’ Association, GASPA, plans wonderful  “family fun” events, parent networking opportunities, and staff appreciation events throughout the year.  Every parent and guardian automatically is a member of GASPA.

When a family needs support, Green Acres staff and parents are there—preparing meals or providing other help that may be needed. Our school counselor is available to students and to parents and staff as well. At every level, class meetings are held on a regular basis for discussion of issues that are important to the children. Small advisory groups also provide opportunities for Middle School students to discuss delicate issues.

The Green Acres curriculum clearly supports the feeling of community. Lower School classes celebrate birthdays every month. In their classes, students learn to cooperate by working in groups at every level. They make presentations regularly, and become very comfortable speaking and performing for classmates and larger audiences. At the 8th grade graduation ceremony, every graduating student confidently makes a unique presentation to a group of approximately 300 people. Our athletics program is very inclusive. A no-cut policy invites every Middle School student to play on our athletic teams. These teams compete against other schools, and whether they win or lose, they always maintain their sense of team pride. Green Acres students develop connections to the larger community as well. Every 7th and 8th grade student performs community service both outside of school and as a support to the school community.

A strong testament to the sense of community at Green Acres is the active involvement of our alumni, which is quite remarkable for a Pre-K to 8th grade school. Green Acres alums have reunions with classmates, and frequently come to school to share their expertise with current students. At a recent meeting of the entire Green Acres School Corporation, a panel of 10 alumni all agreed that at Green Acres they developed both a love for learning and an appreciation for community.

This is just a sampling of the ways in which Green Acres develops and nurtures community. We invite you to visit to better understand what it means to be a part of the Green Acres community.
