Earth Day 2011 Earth Day 2011
178 images | Apr 21, 2011
At Green Acres School, working and playing outside on the school’s 15 acres is the norm. Earth Day, however, provides a special opportunity for the entire school to spend time outside together, working to make the world a better place. The annual day of special activities for all students and staff (held on April 21 this year) not only addresses environmental problems and issues; it empowers students with experience and tools they can use to make a difference. Earth Day activities also build community as students in different grades partner with each other and with staff members who may not be their own teachers, to learn more about environmental stewardship and environmental justice. Among the activities from which students could choose were tree planting, tending the gardens, planting vegetables and herbs to be used in next year’s soup-making for a local soup kitchen, creating Earth Day board games, and making soap out of natural materials. One group engaged in a water simulation exercise to learn more about water resources, distribution, and conservation needs worldwide. Another group worked with Bikes for the World in conjunction with a bicycle safety campaign, learning bicycle care and safety tips. They also learned how to dismantle the 30 bicycles that 8th Graders had collected for Bikes for the World, so that they can be shipped to other countries for people whose only mode of transportation is walking.

Kenyan Visitor Steven Labarakwe Kenyan Visitor Steven Labarakwe
50 images | Apr 13, 2011
On April 13, Green Acres was fortunate to host a visit from Steven Labarakwe, an educator from the northern Kenyan village of Ngurunit. This remote area is home to the Samburu people. The Elementary School Heads Association (ESHA) invited Steven to visit after ESHA representatives met him in Kenya last summer. During his two-week stay, Steven visited several local schools including The Harbor School and The Woods Academy. His local host, Laurel Seid and her family, also took Steven to the Baltimore Aquarium. Steven was amazed by all the sea creatures. This was a wonder to a man from a drought-plagued grassland.

Capital BookShare Capital BookShare
10 images | Apr 6, 2011 - Apr 12, 2011
Sixth graders recently concluded their school-wide book drive for Capital BookShare to promote the importance of literacy. Capital BookShare staff were completely overwhelmed and thankful for the 1,628 books that we donated to under-resourced schools. They would like to thank the whole community for coming together to support literacy. This book drive stemmed from the 6th Grade’s reading of the novel Taste of Salt by Frances Temple. The students were astonished that so many children in Haiti and around the world do not know how to read and write. They connected with the main character, Djo, as they taught literacy lessons to younger students in library classes last week.

When Miranda Weiss was a student at Green Acres School in the ’80s, one of her 5th grade class projects was an in-depth study of one of the 50 States. Miranda chose to study Alaska, and what she learned ignited a love and intrigue for “The Last Frontier” and a desire to visit someday. Miranda not only visited Alaska, but moved there. Now a resident of Homer, Alaska, she has written Tide, Feather, Snow, a memoir about life in Alaska. She came to Green Acres to speak with students about writing and life in Alaska. Students gathered in the Gully for Miranda’s presentation. She had them begin with a stream-of-consciousness writing exercise.

Fifth graders integrated their science and language arts studies by conducting individual research into the senses of an animal. They wrote about their findings in an outline, a five-paragraph essay, a poem, a mini-saga, and a map. Students also constructed models of animal and human eyes and wrote a comparative paragraph on the anatomy and physiology of the two. They presented their projects to parents, staff, and younger students, who visited their displays and were eager to learn from the 5th grade researchers.

Chincoteague 2010 Chincoteague 2010
13 images | May 11, 2010 - May 14, 2010
Seventh graders spent their outdoor education week in Chincoteague. They studied the barrier island and its habitats—the beach and dunes, low and high marshes, the shrub community, and the maritime forest. Students learned to identify the birds that migrate to the island and their role in the ecosystem. They also looked at the endangered species in this wetland, enhancing their understanding of the value of guarding the wetlands as buffers protecting the inland areas from storms, as filters of waters, as food resources, as a nesting place to various animals, and home to migrating birds. Students also participated in a boat program with rangers from Marine Science Consortium, learning about the aquatic life on the East Coast, tides, and about beach erosion.

During the initial school visit on October 5, the Trio introduced the theme of the composition, “Irish Fantasy,” for oboe trio and recorders written by Jonathan Jensen, another member of the BSO, as a special commission for the program. Between school appearances by the musicians, all 4th grade students will learn to play the theme and variations on soprano recorders. The return visit to the school by the Trio on Monday, December 7, will feature a joint performance of the composition by the 4th graders and BSO musicians, for an audience of students and parents.
