Value of Play

Play is an essential part of our Early Childhood Unit. It gives the children opportunities to gain skill in regulating their behavior and emotions. The diverse playground options for students at Green Acres allow children to make independent choices about their activities and their playmates. When children rely upon themselves to create games, imagine stories, and control impulses they learn to regulate their own behavior, and they increase self control, self discipline and cognitive flexibility. Teachers actively facilitate children’s mastery of concepts and skills through play.

Outside play is an extension of inside learning time. Pre-K and Kindergarten students spend a significant portion of their school day outdoors, where they explore and interact in many different ways and begin to develop an understanding of the natural world. In small groups with teachers, they visit various school playgrounds on our campus and follow paths through the surrounding woodlands. Off-campus field trips to places like local parks, nature centers, theaters, libraries, and the zoo expand their world further.
