Early Childhood Unit

The Early Childhood Program is the wellspring of our philosophy and of our respect for the individual child. Here, exposure to a wide variety of materials and open-ended, hands-on activities ignites the curiosity and creativity of our youngest students and enables them to wonder, explore, discover, and make sense of their world. We support students in developing their understanding of conceptual knowledge and in their development of social and physical skills. With purposeful design, Pre-K and Kindergarten students learn in warm, secure classroom spaces that invite students to develop peer connections and a sense of ownership over their learning environment. Small homecorner groups provide the safety and stimulation that students need to learn to share, make choices, solve problems, resolve differences, build skills, and experience success. Students experience learning opportunities that launch them enthusiastically into the world of mathematical thinking and literacy. Children learn by doing, they use invented spelling to write stories that they share in “author’s chair” with their peers or puzzle through multi-step math challenges by counting and recording their thinking. Through play, children develop communication, problem-solving, and self-management skills and expand their emerging social competencies.
