Schedule and Course Overview
- School begins at 8:20 for all students. Arrival is between 7:50 and 8:20. Students are dismissed at 3:05 on every day except for Wednesday when the ending time is 2:20. (There are staff meetings on that day from the end of school until 5:00.)
- Pre-Kindergarten and Kindergarten students meet in the Early Childhood classrooms. Literacy (pre-reading, reading and writing) and Math skills are taught within the structure of daily Group, Nametag, and Choice activities. Music and Art are incorporated into the program. In small groups, students travel out of the classrooms to Science, Library, Art, Creative Movement, Alphabet Soup (Language Arts/Drama), Kaleidoscope (Math/Drama) and Physical Education classes. Outdoor play is scheduled twice a day with an emphasis on developing physical and social skills. Quiet time is scheduled into each Pre-Kindergarten day.
- First and second graders begin and end their day in the First and Second Grade Building where they learn Language Arts, Social Studies, and Math in small grade groups. Guided by teachers, students move to other buildings for scheduled special subjects: Music, Science, Library, Art, Belle Plates, Computers (2nd grade), Creative Movement, and Physical Education. Classes are 45 or 60 minutes long. Students have scheduled recesses each morning and after lunch with occasional additional afternoon breaks.
- Third and fourth graders begin and end their day in the Third and Fourth Grade Building where they learn Humanities (Language Arts and Social Studies) and Math. They also move to other buildings for special subjects: Music, Chimes & Handbells, Chorus (4th grade), Science, Art, Library, Physical Education, and Spanish. All classes are 45 or 60 minutes long. Students have scheduled recesses each morning and after lunch with occasional additional afternoon breaks.
- Fifth grade is the beginning of our middle school. Fifth and sixth graders have classes in Math, Spanish, Language Arts, Social Studies, Advisory, and Drama in the Middle School Building. They move to other buildings for other classes: Science, Physical Education, Music, Chorus (5th grade), Handbells, and Art. Classes are almost all 45 or 60 minutes long. Break, or recess time, is 30 minutes each morning. Students can also play indoors and out during lunch.
- Seventh graders begin their day in the Middle School Building and eighth graders begin theirs in the Woods Building, which is traditionally the grade�s �home base. (Why choose a school that ends in 8th grade?) Seventh grade classes include: Language Arts and Geography (a combined course), Social Studies, Pre-Algebra or Algebra, Science, Spanish, Advisory, and Physical Education. Eighth graders take Language Arts, World Studies, Ethics and Community Service, Pre-Algebra, Algebra, Advanced Algebra or Geometry (is not offered every year), Science, Spanish, Advisory, and Physical Education, and Photography. Instrumental Ensemble is offered for students with a year or more of outside instruction. Seventh and eighth graders have choices of arts classes. During scheduled sessions they elect classes in Art, Ceramics, Drama, Music (guitar or vocal), Handbells, Photography, and Yearbook. Classes are almost all 45 or 60 minutes long. Science classes have a 90 minute block. Break, or recess time, is 30 minutes each morning. Students can also play indoors and out during lunch.
