General:
Founded in 1934, Green Acres is a school that exudes joy, engenders strong loyalty, and graduates young people who go on to be leaders in their schools and communities. The program is based on extensive knowledge about the ways children learn best and supports the academic, social, emotional, physical, and creative growth of students in an intellectually stimulating environment. On a beautiful 15-acre campus near Washington, DC, classrooms are extended beyond school walls - not only to woods, streams, playgrounds, and athletic fields of the campus, but to all that the nation’s capital offers.
Staff at Green Acres School enjoy a collegial and congenial work environment and a supportive community. Teachers collaborate regularly within a single grade, within a two-grade unit, within their division, with Special Subject teachers, and with others throughout the School when special projects are planned. Such collaboration is key to the School’s integrated curriculum, to the Progressive philosophy of the School, and to carrying out the School’s mission. This mission includes an appreciation for diversity, for protecting the environment, for joyful student-centered learning, for respect and care for others, and for authentic learning that is relevant to the real world.
Throughout the school year, Green Acres staff members share additional duties outside the classroom. Teachers have opportunities to coach Middle School athletic teams and to teach after-school enrichment classes for additional compensation.
Teachers at Green Acres School enjoy mentoring, professional development, and a generous benefits package including tuition remission for children at the School, health insurance, life insurance, long term care insurance, retirement plan participation, and leave.

Part Time Spanish Teacher (Grades 3 and 4)
Approximately 20 hours per week
Third and fourth grade students have Spanish classes twice per week in groupings of approximately 14 students. The approach, based on research in language development, is highly communicative. Classes are conducted in Spanish, utilizing authentic games, songs, conversations, and other activities to help children internalize language components such as its sound system, basic lexicon, and grammatical structure. Students speak, listen, read, and write in Spanish to develop communicative fluency, an understanding of how the language is constructed, and an understanding of culturally appropriate interactions.
The curriculum introduces students to the varieties of language and cultures in Spanish speaking countries, worldwide. Students learn about important celebrations in Spanish speaking countries including Cinco de Mayo, Day of the Dead, and Encounter of Two Worlds. The curriculum is integrated with that of social studies, art, music, and other classes.
The Lower School Spanish Teacher coordinates with Middle School Spanish teachers to ensure a cohesive curricular progression.
