Second Grade Kid Talk
Each week 2nd graders gather together with their teacher for a session of Kid Talk. These talks revolve around issues raised by the students. In a 30-minutes session, each child has a chance to set the agenda, to problem solve, and to contribute possible solutions. Many 2nd graders look forward to Kid Talk because these meeting give them an opportunity to have their voices heard. Children quickly learn to consider the perspectives of classmates.
Ground rules for Kid Talk include:
- Everyone should feel safe
- Take turns and listen
- No put downs
- No mentioning names
In a recent Kid Talk session, students discussed fairness in choosing teams. The collective wisdom of the group determined that to be really fair, kids should implement the age old game “Rock, Paper, Scissors.” Every Kid Talk session helps build a stronger 2nd grade community.
