  • Founded in 1934, we celebrate 75 years as the Washington area’s leading progressive school and a national leader in progressive education. Green Acres hosted the National Progressive Education Network Conference in October 2009 and has provided strong leadership in all other PEN conferences. Read our mission and philosophy.
  • Strong academics, arts, athletics, and technology. Challenging coursework; in depth, interdisciplinary projects; weekly assemblies; frequent student exhibits and productions; physical education three or four times per week; Spanish instruction; community service learning in all grades; outdoor education.   • Faculty and Staff - 47 total faculty members; 28 have graduate degrees; 16 have taught at Green Acres for more than 20 years; 30 faculty and staff members are parents of current or former Green Acres students; 17 faculty and staff members are people of color or represent international diversity.
  • Diversity - The first racially integrated school in Montgomery County, 30% of the current student body represents racial, international, and ethnic diversity. We value all aspects of individual and family diversity.
  • Financial assistance awarded to 22% of students for 2011-2012. We work closely with families to provide as much assistance as possible.
  • Campus - 15 beautifully wooded acres in a quiet residential neighborhood. Six newly constructed or renovated classroom buildings include three science rooms, two music rooms, two art rooms including a ceramics room, a twenty thousand-volume library, photo lab, creative movement room, teaching kitchen. Extensive playgrounds. Classes indoors and outside.
  • Our strong community includes families from Maryland, Virginia, and the District of Columbia. Many are from Montgomery County.
  • Alumni are highly valued by their next schools. More than 90% are offered admission to one of their two top choices and compete successfully for prized college placement.

  • School hours - Monday, Tuesday, Thursday, Friday - 8:20 am - 3:05 pm; Wednesday - 8:20 am - 2:20 pm.

  • The Extended Day Program is available to all students until 6:00 pm with a drop in option.

  • The After-School Enrichment Program offers a variety of options throughout the year.
  • Interscholastic After-School Sports for grades 5-8. No-cut policy.
  • Governance - 22 voting Trustees include 3 staff Trustees, the Head of School, 13 parent Trustees, up to 6 community Trustees including alumni Trustees and 1 GASPA Co-chair (non-voting).
